Nothing can replace the natural look and feel of timber. Timber’s timeless look can be easily incorporated into various traditional and contemporary design aesthetics. With timber shutters, you’ll never have to worry about your window furnishings going out of style.

checklist

Lightweight

Timber plantation window shutters are incredibly lightweight, which makes them easier to transport and manage. They are ideal for covering large windows or doors where large-sized panels are required to match. So, if you’re planning to get large bi-fold or sliding shutters for your existing sliding or stacker door, timber shutters might be the best solution.

Controls heat

Keeping your plantation blinds closed during winter will help to retain warmth. This means there’s less reliance on your heaters to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. In the long run, this will result in a significant reduction in energy consumption, which means lower energy bills.

Basswood Shutters: Why It's Our Chosen Timber

Not every timber makes a good plantation shutter. We build ours from basswood, and it’s a deliberate choice.

What is basswood

Basswood is a light hardwood from the Tilia tree, found across North America and parts of Europe. It has a fine, uniform grain and a naturally smooth finish. Outside the shutter world, basswood is the material of choice for carving and musical instruments because of how stable it stays through humidity and temperature changes. That stability is exactly what a shutter panel needs.

Why basswood works for plantation shutters

Three properties make basswood the industry standard for premium timber shutters.

Dimensional stability. Basswood doesn’t warp or swell like harder timbers do when humidity shifts. A shutter panel that binds or sags after a wet Melbourne winter is a shutter that gets replaced. Basswood shutters don’t do that.

Light weight. Large window openings need panels that stay operable across their full range. Basswood is light enough that even wide panels hang and swing cleanly on their hinges without needing heavier hardware or reinforcement.

Even stain acceptance. Basswood takes stain uniformly, with no blotching or grain irregularity. That’s what allows the finish depth on a stained basswood shutter to look consistent across the whole panel.

Stain colours and finishes available

Our custom basswood shutters come in 10+ stain colour options plus a range of white and neutral shades. Custom colour matching is available for clients who need the shutter finish to match specific trim, joinery or cabinetry in their home. That’s part of our custom plantation shutters service.

Basswood in different rooms

Basswood suits every room in the home except wet areas. Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, studies and hallways all work well with basswood shutters. The natural timber grain adds warmth and character that PVC and aluminium can’t match.
For bathrooms, laundries, ensuites and kitchens, we recommend PVC plantation shutters instead. Timber can absorb moisture over time and swell in high-humidity rooms. PVC handles that environment without any damage.

Basswood vs other timber options

Some competitors offer harder timbers or manufactured timber composites. There are reasons we don’t.

Harder timbers (oak, maple, mahogany) are heavier. On a wide window, that extra weight becomes a problem – the panel sags over time, the hinges take more strain, and the shutter opens less cleanly. Harder timbers also swell more in humid conditions than basswood does.

Manufactured timber composites are engineered to look like real wood but they’re not. They can chip at the edges, delaminate over time, and lack the finish depth that stained basswood carries.

Basswood is the workhorse of premium plantation shutters because it’s the right balance of durability, weight and finish quality. That’s why our basswood shutters are backed by a full manufacturer warranty and are built to last decades.

Popular Shutter Mounting options

Here are 4 most common ways to mount your timber plantation shutters – see below 👇
