Almost everything sold as custom in this market is an imported panel cut to a standard size range. It works on a rectangular window in a newer house, which is most of the market, and it is why the word has stopped meaning very much.
We make the panels in our own Melbourne factory. That is what lets us say yes to an arched head, a bay, a raked stairwell window or an opening that is 12mm out of square, rather than explaining why those are not available.

What Custom Actually Means Here
There are two different things being called custom, and the difference shows up on the awkward windows rather than on the easy ones.
Custom sizing
means a standard rectangular panel made to your dimensions. Nearly every supplier offers it, including the flat-pack ones, and within a size range it is genuinely useful
Custom manufacture
means the panel is engineered for the opening: the shape, the number of panels, where the splits fall, how the frame deals with an opening that is not square, and where the hardware sits so you can still use the window. That is only possible when the panels are made locally and the person specifying them has stood at the window
Every shutter we supply is made to measure in Melbourne. Nothing is cut down from stock.
The Windows That Need Custom Manufacture
Arched and curved heads. The frame follows the shape rather than boxing it off. This is the one people are most often told is not possible.
Raked and angled windows. Common on stairwells, voids and gable ends. The panel is cut to the rake so the blades finish level.
Bay windows. Treated as separate windows joined at the angles rather than as one opening, so each face gets its own panel set and the joins land on the mullions.
Very wide openings and stacker doors. Panel width is limited by weight and by what the hardware carries, so a wide opening is covered with more panels. Where the panels go when they open is decided by the wall beside the opening. Our bi-fold vs sliding guide sets out that choice.
Openings that are out of square. Older Melbourne housing moves. A frame that accounts for it is the difference between a shutter that looks right and one you keep noticing.
Windows with a handle, winder or flyscreen track in the way. The panel split and the frame are set around the hardware so the window still works with the shutters closed.
Corner and narrow windows. Narrow openings in particular need the frame proportion thought about, or the shutter reads as all frame and no blade.
Materials, Blades and Finishes
PVC
Aluminium reinforced and water resistant, for bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and family rooms that get cleaned often. Holds a clean white finish and does not swell.
Timber
Basswood, light for its strength, which is what a tall or wide panel needs. White tones plus a range of stains, for rooms where the finish is doing the work.
Aluminium
Powder coated and rated for exposure, for balconies, patios, carports and the open side of an alfresco. Indoor materials do not go outside.
Blade size
63mm, 89mm or 114mm. Wider blades give a cleaner view line and suit large windows. Narrower blades suit small windows and period proportions, where a wide blade looks heavy.
Frame and mount

What Moves the Price on a Custom Job
Three things push a job to the top of its range: custom shapes, mount position and colour options. A standard rectangular window in white sits at the bottom. An arched head, a stained timber finish or a face-mounted frame across the whole house moves it up.
Window type moves the number far more than window count does. Four windows and a stacker door is a different job from eight standard windows. How We Work
We measure in your home, standing at the openings, and record reveal depth, square and hardware position for every window. Panels are made in our own Melbourne factory, and our own installers fit them. Nothing is subcontracted.
That matters most on the awkward windows. An imported panel that comes back wrong is a shipping cycle. A panel made here that comes back wrong is a remake in weeks.
