Plantation Shutters Doncaster

What Doncaster Windows Actually Need

Doncaster has the biggest windows we deal with. Elevated blocks, double-storey brick homes from the seventies and eighties, and a newer generation of rebuilds with glazing that runs almost floor to ceiling. Large openings are where shutters are either very good or very badly specified, and the difference is panel engineering rather than material.

Doncaster sits in the City of Manningham, on some of the highest ground in the eastern suburbs. That elevation is why the houses were built the way they were, with the living areas turned toward the view and the glazing sized to match.

Large feature windows. Panel width on a shutter is limited by weight and by what the hardware will carry, so a wide opening is covered with more panels rather than wider ones. A four metre living room window is a multi-panel job with the panel count worked out at the measure, and it is the calculation a flat-pack supplier cannot do for you.

Raked and angled heads. Common in the double-storey stock here, particularly on stairwell and void windows. A raked head is a manufacturing instruction for us because we make the panels in Melbourne. It is a reason to be told no by anyone importing a standard size range.

Sliding and stacker doors to the deck. Most of these houses open onto a deck or a terrace. Wide door openings take bi-fold or sliding shutter tracks, and which one suits comes down to whether there is wall beside the opening for panels to fold onto. If there is not, sliding is the answer.

Afternoon sun. West and north-west aspects are everywhere here because of the way the blocks face. This is the suburb where blade tilt does the most work: cutting the glare on a summer afternoon without closing the room down or losing the view that the house was built around.

Which Material Suits Your Rooms

PVC Plantation Shutters

Aluminium reinforced and water resistant, for bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and any room that gets cleaned often. It holds a clean white finish and does not swell. See our PVC shutters range.

Timber Plantation Shutters

Basswood is light for its strength, which is exactly what a tall or wide panel needs. On the big living room windows this suburb is full of, timber is usually the right call. Available in white tones and ten stains. See our timber shutters range.

Aluminium Outdoor Shutters

Powder coated and rated for exposure. Decks, terraces, balconies and the open side of an alfresco. On an elevated Doncaster block wind load is a real consideration on an exposed panel, and the fixing gets specified accordingly.

The Big Window Problem

Large glazed areas are the reason people in this suburb call about shutters in the first place, and they are also where the wrong product shows up fastest.

Blinds on a four metre window mean a single large fabric panel that is either down or up. Down, you lose the view the house was designed around. Up, you take the full afternoon sun. There is nothing in between, which is why so many of these rooms end up with the blind permanently half way and nobody happy.

A shutter across the same opening splits into panels, and each set of blades tilts independently. You can close the western end down and leave the rest open. On a summer afternoon that is the difference between a usable living room and one nobody sits in until five o’clock.

The trade is cost and weight. More panels means more hardware, and the panel count is set by the opening rather than by preference. That gets worked out at the measure, with the number in front of you before anything is made.

How a Doncaster Job Runs

We measure in your home, standing at the openings. At the measure we check reveal depth, square, panel count for the wide openings, and anything that sticks into the opening: handles, winders, locks and flyscreen tracks.

Panels are then made in our own Melbourne factory and fitted by our own installers. We do not subcontract the install, because the measure and the fit are the same job. Our plantation shutters installation page sets out the process, including the site access questions that come up on an elevated block or a first-floor window.

  • Free in-home measure and quote, written, with materials and installation broken out
  • Panel layout and frame type decided per opening
  • Manufacture in our Melbourne factory
  • Installation and final check by our own team

A wide opening is the one case where a showroom visit genuinely changes the decision, because panel weight and stacking depth are hard to picture from a photograph.

Common Questions About Plantation Shutters in Doncaster

Do you install plantation shutters in Doncaster?

Yes, across Doncaster, Doncaster East and the surrounding Manningham suburbs. We measure in your home, manufacture in our own Melbourne factory and install with our own team, so one business carries the job from the first measurement to the final check.

How wide can a shutter panel be on a large Doncaster window?

Panel width is limited by weight and by what the hardware will carry, so a wide opening is covered with more panels rather than wider ones. The panel count is worked out at the measure against the actual opening, and you see it before anything is made.

Can you do shutters for a raked or angled window?

Yes. Because the panels are made in our own Melbourne factory, a raked head is a manufacturing instruction rather than a reason to say no. It is worth photographing the opening before you book so we know what we are coming to.

What works best on a sliding or stacker door to the deck?

Bi-fold or sliding shutter tracks. Bi-fold clears most of the opening but needs wall beside it for the panels to fold onto. Sliding needs no stacking space but leaves the panels in the opening. Look at the wall beside the door and that usually settles it.

Will shutters help with the afternoon sun?

This is where they earn their place. Blades tilted cut the glare while keeping the view, and each set of panels tilts independently, so you can close the western end of a wide window and leave the rest open. A blind on the same window is either down or up.

Do outdoor shutters on an elevated block need anything special?

The fixing does. An exposed panel on an elevated site takes wind load that an indoor panel never sees, so the fixing is specified against the wall it is going into and checked once a year. The material is aluminium, powder coated, not an indoor product used outside.
